The Citadel’s Duggar Baucom taken to hospital after collapsing during game vs. Duke

Duggar Baucom, The Citadel’s men’s basketball coach, fainted within the first two minutes of his team’s game against No. 5 Duke Monday night.

Baucom, 61, fell to the ground after his team scored his first goal to make it 3-2. Baucom remained in a coma as he was assisted from the Cameron Indoor Stadium. He was taken to Duke University Hospital for a checkup.

The fall occurred suddenly, as shown in the video below:

Citadel assistant coach Jack Castleberry has been a long-term coach for the rest of the game. The Citadel ended up losing Duke 107-81.

At a postgame press conference, Castleberry said Baucom spoke to him after the incident and said he was in a lot of pain. This surprised Castleberry because he said Baucom was “the toughest person I knew.”

DECOURCY: Mike Krzyzewski’s last season’s opening night is a children’s game for Duke’s latest team of talented performers.

The cause of Baucom’s collapse is unknown at this time. The most recent change in her condition is that she went to the hospital and was checked for any problems.

Baucom, in his seventh year coaching The Citadel, managed to meet Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski for the first time before the game.

Baucom told reporters before the game that he always listened to Duke’s game while working as a North Carolina State Trooper and that it was “surreal” to meet Krzyzewski and his rival coach. Season 2021-22 is the last season for Coach K coaching basketball teams.
