What is a National Dog Show?

The National Dog Show is an annual competition held on Thanksgiving Day by the American Kennel Club. 197 breeds of dogs are allowed to participate, but not every breed is seen every year.

There are three different titles that dogs can win in a race. In the first section, dogs of the same species compete to determine how each dog meets certain breed standards. The winners of this line are “Best in Breed,” and these dogs last up to two.

In the second phase, the successful dogs from the first round are scattered into seven different categories: play, hound, work, terrier, toy, non-sport and herding. Dogs are judged here based on their breed. The winner of the “First in Breed” is named after each category. The winning dogs advance to the final, which is “Best in Show.” Every dog that wins the final race becomes the overall winner at the National Dog Show.
