Kazakh prosecutor Aron Atabek has died less than two months after being released from prison for 15 years, according to activists and media reports.
The poet and poet Atabek was 68 years old.
Atabek, known as a Nursultan anti-government activist, died Wednesday in a hospital where he was being treated by COVID-19, almost common quoted a hospital superintendent.
Radio Azattyk mentioned to his sister Atabek that he had died of a heart attack.
He was released last month from spinal cord injury, having spent more than 15 years in prison for 18 years.
Atabek was found guilty of directing violence in 2006 in connection with the demolition of an unlicensed property in Almaty and resulted in the death of a police officer. He has denied any wrongdoing and has refused to apologize, and many consider him a longtime political prisoner of Kazakhstan.
Pictures of Atabek’s release – looking thin – shocked the freedom fighters who criticized government officials for deliberately endangering his health. Prison officials told activists Atabek refused to accept medical treatment.
The freedom fighters blamed government officials for the serious damage to his health.
“She never was – as we saw her on October 1 – one night,” veteran Ainash Kerney wrote on Facebook. “It took me many years and trying to make him so weak.”
There are no real opposition parties in the 19 million oil-rich country, led by one leader, Nursultan Nazarbayev, for almost 30 years until 2019 when he resigned and elected a trusted ally Kassym-Jomart Tokayev as his successor.
Nazarbayev came to power Kazakhstan’s oil-rich country still part of the Soviet Union. He was the leader of the Communist Party and was elected president in 1991 shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union.
He extended his term of office with a resounding victory in the by-elections with plebiscites. In the 2015 election, he received about 98 percent of the vote.
