Hungary warns of US interference in bid to oust premier Viktor Orban

The Hungarian government on Thursday said it expected the US to try to disrupt elections next year in a bid to disrupt Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party, Fidesz, adding that Washington was angry with Budapest over its relationship with former President Donald Trump.

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said he expected Washington to send a mission Magnitsky Act, which could be used to impose sanctions and other sanctions on foreigners for bribery or human rights violations, ahead of an election in Europe before April.

Fidesz experiences very difficult yet as Orban runs for a fourth consecutive election term next year. Szijjarto said Budapest refused to try to overthrow the government.

“We do not live on the Moon. We live in Central Europe. Yes, there have been efforts, ”he said. “It simply came to our notice then. . . I would like to assure the people of Hungary that all relevant institutions are doing their part to prevent the disruption of foreign elections. “

The US withdrew from Hungary for its planned democratic summit, an international conference next month with 110 countries, which observers point to Budapest’s history of democratic and human rights abuses and corruption.

Hungary was the only one in the EU to be ridiculed, which Szijjarto said was “disrespectful”.

US government departments he said on his page: “Leaders will be encouraged to announce. . . domestic and international action against tyranny, corruption and respect for human rights. ”

Hungary has collapsed as a result of all these issues in recent years, with Western officials and dissidents rivaling it, which has led to cold relations with the US and the EU. Brussels is a threat ban billions of euros for Orban to respect the principles of democracy.

“We are committed to supporting the institutions of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and the freedom of the press,” the government department told the Financial Times. “We look forward to working with governments, including Hungarian. . . to combat the stigma attached to democracy, to promote human rights and to prevent corruption. ”

It did not respond to a request for comment on whether the US could use the Magnitsky Act against Hungarian authorities.

While Hungary is seeking closer ties with Russia and China, President Joe Biden did not send an ambassador to Budapest for nearly a year during his tenure.

“Hungarian-American relations reached a peak during the Trump administration,” Szijjarto told FT when asked about the unrest at a press conference.

“We have a lot of respect for the former president, a respect for the middle class. We give the same respect to every US president-elect – regardless of our findings – but it is clear that those who were friends with Donald Trump have not been invited. “

Washington handed down Magnitsky’s sentence against several Bulgarians earlier this year before the election, which led to the fall of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

The American actions “strongly influenced Biden ‘s oversight of Orban anti-Western and anti-EU views over the past 11 years,” said Eurasia Group expert Mujtaba Rahman. “It could show a strong push and criticism of Orban as he is expected to be re-elected next year.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has described Hungary as Russia and Turkey and compared the leaders of those countries to Trump.

“Trump and his aides are the ones who have attacked and attacked our Capitol [in January 2021], they do not like the country we live in and have similarities with autocratic leaders from Russia to Turkey, from Hungary to Brazil, and many other places, “Clinton told MSNBC Wednesday.

Szijjarto of Hungary said that Clinton’s remarks on the Democrat Conference had confirmed that “the event has a domestic political climate, with hidden invitations in countries whose leaders had good relations with former President Donald Trump. . . We do not need anyone to judge Hungarian democracy as if it were on a school examination. ”
