Frequency converters can also be used to operate AC motors at speeds below the nominal frequency. This is known as slip-frequency operation and can be useful in some industrial processes. For example, operating a 50 Hz motor at 40 Hz will increase the torque it produces by approximately 30%.

The output of a frequency converter can be either single-phase or three-phase. Three-phase systems are more common because they provide better power distribution and are more efficient than single-phase systems.

Frequency converters are available in a wide range of sizes, from small units that can be used to power a single electric motor, to large units that can power an entire factory. The size of the unit will be determined by the power rating of the motors that it will be used to control.

The efficiency of a frequency converter is typically between 90% and 95%. This means that for every 100 watts of input power, between 90 and 95 watts will be converted to output power.

Frequency converters are classified according to their input and output voltages and frequencies. For example, a “480V 60Hz to 208V 60Hz” converter would be suitable for use in North America, where the standard line voltage is 480 volts
