Carlos Arthur Nuzman was part of a group that bought votes for Rio de Janeiro to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games.
The former head of the Brazilian Olympic Committee has been sentenced to 30 years and 11 months in prison he says he is buying votes in a bid to win Rio de Janeiro’s participation in the 2016 Olympics.
Judge Marcelo Bretas’ verdict against Carlos Arthur Nuzman, who chaired the committee for 20 years, was announced on Thursday. Nuzman was found guilty of corruption, lawlessness, embezzlement and tax evasion.
However, he will not go to jail until all his grievances are heard.
Bretas also convicted former Rio Governor Sergio Cabral, businessman Arthur Soares and Leonardo Gryner, a former Rio 2016 committee member.
Investigators say the three men and Nuzman agreed to bribe former President of the International Association of Athletics Federations, Lamine Diack, and his son Pope Diack to get votes.
Nuzman was first arrested in October 2017 along with Gryner.
Cabral, who has been in prison since 2016 and faces a number of charges and investigations, told Bretas two years ago that he had taken action. paid about $ 2m in exchange for a total of six votes at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) summit which gave Rio the Olympic Games and the Disabled.
He said the money came from a loan that Soares had lent him.
Cabral, who ruled Rio between 2003 and 2010, added that another $ 500,000 was later given to Diack’s son with the aim of securing three more IOC votes. The former governor is expected to serve 10 years and eight months in prison on the Bretas’ sentence.
The judge ruled that Nuzman was “one of the most important [people responsible] to promote and organize the criminal conspiracy, having been appointed to the Brazilian Olympic Committee and to the international authorities ”.
Bretas also said that the head of the game “led and co-ordinated the actions of other facilitators, clearly as a leader” to assist the IOC illegally.
The judge said he had sent the results of the investigation to authorities in Senegal and France, where Pope Diack and Lamine Diack live, respectively.
Rio Price to know Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid hosting the 2016 Games.
Officials in Brazil launched their investigation in 2017 after the French newspaper Le Monde found that IOC members had accepted bribes three days before the 2009 conference in Copenhagen where Rio was selected to take part in the Games.
